Let's Not Be Short About It

Of all the ways people can superficially judge each other, there is no more arbitrary criteria than height. An "ideal" weight can be difficult to impossible to maintain but, at least in theory, we all do have total control of how much we eat and exercise. Facial beauty, whatever that may mean, is largely genetic but there is a great deal we can do to improve it. Even people who have been cursed with noses deemed different than the social ideal can at least consider plastic surgery, though it's expensive and going under the knife within close proximity to doctors and nurses in scrubs uniforms is never fun.

Yet, there is really next to nothing a person can do about their physical height that's safe or effective. Certainly, once we're grown, our height is a fait accompli -- barefoot, at least. It's true that, unlike the narrator of Randy Newman's satirical hit, "Short People," no intelligent person rationally thinks shorter people are any less worthy than tall people or any less accomplished in any field outside of basketball. Nevertheless, too many people subconsciously make assumptions about shorter people being somehow less powerful or commanding.

In work, height might be a relatively subtle issue, but in dating it can be hard to miss. Read online dating notices sometime. While few men would have to nerve to request a minimum brassiere size, many women will routinely state specific minimum heights.
